Semi-Annual Design Field Trips

STUDENTS NEED TO SEE DESIGN

In my first teaching position, I found students had seen very little design + architecture that created excitement. By organizing semi-annual field trips to nearby cities, students were afforded the opportunity to see design and develop a greater understanding of the built environment. When presented with the first ASID student conference, students showed immense interests. By leading fund raising efforts, we were able to achieve the monetary goal that enabled all students who wished to attend, the opportunity.  Some students had never before been on a plane so faculty support included everything from fund raising efforts to organization and planning to instructions on how to pack for air travel. Design field trips included Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and New Orleans. ASID student conferences included Savannah, GA and Norman, OK.

Home + Garden Shows

AUSTIN, TX

SAN ANTONIO, TX

Worked with convention organizers, HGTV personalities, and student clubs to feature students in local Home + Garden Shows. Organized internal department competition with concept boards judges by industry professionals. Obtained sponsors from paint manufacturers, furniture companies, and home decor stores for student to complete installations. Competition winners install room vignettes with support of local vendors for showcase of design talent. HGTV personalities judge entrants and students receive prizes as well as networking opportunities. Students who used the experience as a networking opportunity, all found freelance opportunities as a result.

Student Organizations

STUDENT SOCIETY MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

By serving as the faculty liaison to the Interior Design student society in multiple programs, I was able to encourage and influence activities, membership, and direct the establishment of bylaws. Membership dramatically increased as the organization transitioned from a group of friends who occasionally hosted a bake sale to group that enjoyed community speakers, multi-city field trips, and design opportunities.
